JULIE QUIGLEY: CREATOR OF QUIGCAKES BAKERY

QuigCakes Bakery, a cottage bakery based in North Hills Meridian, MS, is the culmination of a baking passion I’ve had for quite some time. I grew up baking with my mother and grandmother, and have always had a love for visual art as well as culinary pastries and baked goods. There is such an art and science to baking, and I’m constantly learning from others on how to achieve great taste and visual beauty in my baked creations. I hope you’ll enjoy eating my baked cakes and cupcakes as much as I enjoy creating them for the Meridian community.

My Baking Background

Coming from an Italian family on my father’s side, it’s simply part of the culture to incorporate delicious baked goods into any occasion or even just a daily meal.  Some of my fondest memories are get-togethers with my extended family which were all about the food – especially the baked treats prepared by my grandmother and her four sisters. One of our family traditions is to serve cookie cakes (giant stacked platters of homemade baked cookies) along with the wedding cake.

Visual Arts Training

In my senior year of high school, I decided to pursue a career in the visual arts. I trained for four years at the University of Georgia in fine arts such as painting and sculpture, as well as in elements of graphic design such as color theory, layout, and typography. Cake decorating is one application of arts training, which translates beautifully to techniques such as modeling fondant figurines or palette-knife buttercream painting. After finishing my graphic design education, I worked at an Atlanta based design studio for about 5 years while continuing studies on databases and web site development. After relocating to Meridian, MS, I ran my own graphic design and web site design business for nearly a decade, before transitioning into new career opportunities that allow me to be more active and away from a desk. I recently completed my studies in elementary education and work part time in the education sector, which is another creative outlet in addition to my cake business.

Cake Decorating Training

While I have always enjoyed baking and visual arts, I didn’t really put the two together until taking a cake decorating course in 2009 through the Workforce Development program at Meridian Community College. At the time, it was just for fun and I had no intention of starting a bakery in Meridian, Mississippi! Through this course, I was introduced to the Wilton Method of Cake Decorating. I loved learning from my instructor Rosalie (of Rosalie’s Sweet Creations Cake Shop, a  Meridian bakery formerly located downtown before her retirement).

Wilton Cake Decorating Method Level 1 focused on learning basics like prepping a pastry bag, leveling and stacking a cake, and hand-piping buttercream decorations from simple star borders to buttercream figures. Wilton Cake Decorating Method Level 2 progressed to techniques like buttercream florals, royal icing decorations, and tiered cakes. The cake decorating course kicked off my love of cake decorating as a long-time hobby during my time living here in Meridian. I’ve been hooked ever since!

A New Meridian Bakery Business

While buttercream piping is my first love, over the years I have gained some experience working with fondant cakes, royal icing custom decorated sugar cookies and other sugar art mediums. I enjoy looking at bakery books, cake decorating reference pictures online, and watching cake decorating video tutorials to improve.

I love to follow other bakers to learn from their work, and I am constantly impressed by the beautiful cake and cookie creations from the talented baking community right here in Meridian, MS.

QuigCakes Bakery Vision

My latest passion is buttercream floral cupcake bouquets. I hope to offer cupcake bouquets to the the Meridian, MS area as the signature product of QuigCakes Bakery, a local Meridian bakery shop to offer edible arrangement-type cupcake bouquet gifts and cupcake bouquet centerpieces. In addition to cupcake bouquets, I also offer custom cake creations for any Meridian event, especially cakes for birthday parties, baby showers, engagement parties, and more.
